BCHacks was the first Hackathon to reach the UBC Okanagan Campus. It took place from January 18 to 19 and brought together 150 of the top student developers, designers and builders from the Okanagan region.
A Hackathon is an event that can last up to several days where many people join to engage in collaborative computer programming. BCHacks is one of 200 weekend-long invention competitions that are powered by Major League Hacking, which is the official student hackathon league.
BCHacks was organized by the Computer Science Course Union and Girls in Tech, two UBCO groups that provide professional development opportunities and community-building events for students in technology-related fields.
The organizers of BCHacks created an inclusive environment for students of all experience levels. They encouraged any student with an interest in technology to participate, not just those studying Computer Science. The only constraint was that participants had to be enrolled in a university program or graduated within the last 12 months.
BCHacks was completely free to participate in which furthered the inclusivity of the event. It was the perfect addition to UBC Okanagan’s creative and collaborative environment, and it gave students in the Okanagan area a platform to demonstrate their passion for programming.
