Have you ever walked past a cozy-looking office on campus and wondered what went on inside? If so, let me introduce you to one of the most heartwarming, inclusive, and empowering places at UBC Okanagan: the SUO Women’s Resource Centre (WRC), located in UNC132A. It is more than just a space, it is a community, and I want to share why this center is such a hidden gem that deserves a special place in the hearts of every student on our campus.

The WRC has been an integral part of UBCO since 2003, providing a safe and supportive environment for women and those who identify as female. Whether you’re looking for a place to connect, recharge, or participate in empowering events, the WRC opens its doors to all.

The first time I stepped into the WRC, I felt something I had not expected: a sense of belonging. It was not just a room, but a sanctuary, a place where the hustle and stress of university life melted away. I could talk openly, meet new friends, and simply be myself. And that is when I realized that this was not just a place for those seeking help. It was a hub for connection, empowerment, and community.

What truly makes the WRC special are its events, which are ever-changing and reflect the diversity and creativity of our campus. Each year, the WRC plans unique and exciting activities, ranging from thought-provoking to just pure fun. The events are not limited to a few standard types. They evolve every academic year to ensure that they continue to reflect the interests and needs of the students.

Take, for example, the Chocolate Factory Gala that took place on International Women’s Day 2023. Students from across campus gathered to celebrate the incredible achievements of women while indulging in delicious chocolate creations. It was a one-time event, but it left a lasting impact, reminding us of the power of women’s voices, and how sweet celebrating them can be.

There are also the more regular, hands-on creative events that the WRC offers throughout the year. One that stood out to me was the Feminist Painting event, held on November 28th, 2023. It was not just about creating art, it was about expressing ourselves, our ideas about gender, equality, and empowerment on canvas. It was a room full of students, blank canvases, and a whole lot of important conversations about what it means to be a feminist today.

For those of us who love a bit of nostalgia, the Friendship Bracelet Making event, which took place on November 23rd, 2023, was the perfect combination of craft and connection. I will never forget sitting around the table, working on my bracelet while chatting with new friends. It felt like a small act of creativity, but it fostered something bigger: a sense of community.

Finally, if you are into more tangible, sensory experiences, the Candle Making Workshop at the Kelowna Candle Factory was a memorable one-time event. We had the opportunity to create something both functional and beautiful, all while sharing stories and laughter with fellow students. That's the beauty of the WRC’s events — they offer unique moments that combine fun and creativity with a chance to connect. Every time I go to an event, I reflect on how much of an impact they have on my university experience:
