Here is a small taste of Thanksgiving events that took place at UBC Okanagan this year.
Aboriginal Programs & Services Thanksgiving Potluck
Aboriginal Programs & Services hosted its annual Thanksgiving Potluck that features food contributions from staff and students. This year, the event had more than 75 participants which included two Elders in Residence, Eric Mitchell and Chris Marchand from the Okanagan Nation. They were joined by language instructor Richard Armstrong, also an Elder within the Okanagan Nation, who brought his class to the gathering. There was a strong sense of community at the Thanksgiving Potluck as students showed respect for the Elders and helped clean up afterwards.
Afro-Giving is an African and Caribbean style Thanksgiving celebration held by the African Caribbean Student Club. The event featured authentic African and Caribbean foods as well as plenty of good music and dancing. The event was an all around fun-time and had a turnout of around 100 people. Lots of great pictures and videos from the event can be found on the ACSC Instagram.
RezGiving is a Thanksgiving event put on by RezLead for residents who stay in Kelowna over the Thanksgiving long weekend. The RezGiving dinner included a home cooked meal of turkey, steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie including vegan, vegetarian and gluten free/dairy free options for those with dietary restrictions. Activities at RezGiving this year included giant Jenga, a photo booth, a raffle with prizes, and more. Around 250 people attended RezGiving this year with some even experiencing their first ever Thanksgiving dinner.
