On September 7, the legacy of 19 year old Bianca Andreescu begun as she defeated legendary Serena Williams to become the first Canadian tennis player to win a grand slam singles title.
The event took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, where history was made for the young tennis star. This, without a doubt, is a big moment in sports for Canada, and it is exciting to see the Mississauga, Ontario teen have major success on the big stage.
Andreescu’s opponent Serena Williams is not new to competition and has won 23 grand slams and a variety of other notable tournaments and championships. Williams, who is 37 years of age, Turned pro in 1995, 5 years before Andreescu was even born.
Andreescu, collects this championship after only playing 4 times in the majors in her career. At only 19, we can speculate that the future has more in store for her. Her prize for winning the U.S. Open was a whopping $3.85 million.
