Homecoming was filled amazing events. The UBC Okanagan campus was bustling with students despite it being a weekend. On October 20, students and families gathered by the Stone Circle for the Great UBC Okanagan Scavenger Race. Jon Montgomery, Olympic champion as well as the host of The Amazing Race, made a special appearance to motivate the participants up before beginning the race.
After receiving their clues, participants set out to finish their missions as fast as possible. Scattered around campus were a variety of game stations where participants stopped by to go through fun challenges. Participants were rewarded with a star-shaped sticker after passing each challenge. There was a total of 10 stations placed in different locations ranging from the EME all the way to the Commons.
The community also lent a hand in putting up stations. The Sun FM station had a challenge where participants had to listen and guess in order to pass the challenge. Axe Monkeys even brought in a mobile truck outside the UNC and participants had to throw axes to get a star. Other game stations included skee ball, and ring toss.
All participants were rewarded with delicious food at the Scavenger Race After Party in the UNC Ballroom. The winning team was announced then and received an amazing prize. Prizes were also given out to every team.
“We won a trip for 4 to Vancouver to RBCxMusic to go see a P!nk concert, all expense paid,” Kimberly Billinton, a participant of the winning team, The Team B, expressed in excitement.
The participants had to use both brains and brawn to finish the race. Billinton said that the key to winning the race was teamwork: “we sat down and came up with a game plan before as soon as we got the roles. Just working together as a team, like Jon said it before, to really rely on your teammates and always read your clues.”
