On Monday, the UBC Okanagan Students' Union appointed Shaman McLean as the interim VP Internal following an anonymous preferential vote amongst the Board of Directors.
Following the departure of Romey Jaswal, who ran unopposed for the position of VP Internal and won by 745 votes to 187 in the 2016 UBCSUO elections, the Board of Directors were forced to spend May and the early weeks of June searching for a temporary replacement.
Last week, a VP Internal Hiring Committee helped shortlist six candidates out of the initial 19 who applied for the position. Following multiple interviews, the Board of Directors voted via an anonymous preferential ballot on who should become the next VP Internal. The ballot results concluded with Shaman McLean emerging with the most votes.
“I’m sad to see Romey go, but I know that he's going to do great things,” said McLean. "I look forward to working with the board and I will work hard to make sure that we are accountable and delivering on our promises.”
UBCSUO President Blake Edwards has stated he respects the board’s decision following a difficult hiring process despite the fact he was surprised by the results.
"I think it was unexpected the way the board voted, but I respect their decision,” said Edwards. “I do hold certain reservations about the selected candidate based off their previous record in the role. It was very competitive with 19 applicants, so I hope he commits himself to the role. There are many people holding us accountable this year, so I hope the role isn't taken for granted.”
Although the hiring process is complete for now, UBCSUO Bylaw VII 18 states that the appointment will only be temporary.
According to the bylaw, “if vacancies among the voting Director positions have arisen on the Board of Directors, whether or not the vacancies have been filled by appointment, a by-election shall be held between September 15 and October 15 to fill the vacancies by election.”
Although the dust has settled for the time being, students can expect an election for the position of VP Internal sometime in September or early October.
